Celebrating 250 Years of Artistic Excellence

  • June 27, 2026

For 250 years, music has been woven into the fabric of the American story. From the earliest days of our nation to the present, music has served as a reflection of who we are, a celebration of our diversity, and a powerful force that brings people together across communities, cultures, and generations.

As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, we also celebrate 250 years of extraordinary musical achievement. The United States has given rise to some of the world’s most influential musical traditions and innovations, shaping genres, artists, and cultural movements that have resonated far beyond our borders. From concert halls and classrooms to houses of worship, community centers, stages, studios, and living rooms, music has been a defining expression of the American experience.

The impact of music extends well beyond culture alone. Music is a powerful economic engine that supports millions of jobs, fuels entrepreneurship and innovation, drives tourism and local economies, and contributes billions of dollars annually to the nation’s economic vitality. From educators and performers to composers, technicians, manufacturers, publishers, venue operators, and countless others, music enriches lives while strengthening communities and creating opportunity.

American music also serves as one of our nation’s most enduring exports. Our artists, ensembles, composers, and creative industries have inspired audiences across the globe, fostering cultural understanding and demonstrating the universal language of music. Through educational exchanges, performances, recordings, and emerging technologies, American music continues to connect people and build bridges around the world.

As President of the National Music Council, I am proud to recognize the countless musicians, educators, advocates, organizations, and supporters who have contributed to this remarkable legacy. Their dedication has ensured that music remains an essential part of our national identity and a source of inspiration for future generations. As we look ahead to the next 250 years, let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every person has the opportunity to experience, create, learn, and benefit from music. By investing in music education, supporting creative expression, protecting artistic innovation, and celebrating our rich musical heritage, we honor our past while building a stronger and more vibrant future.

Music has helped tell America’s story for 250 years. Its next chapter promises to be just as inspiring.
